The bleak ( Alburnus alburnus , syn .: Cyprinus alburnus ), also called ablette , arbor , onion fish or laugele (Lake Constance), belongs to the subfamily Alburninae of carp-like fish (Cyprinidae).

features

It has a slim body with a laterally flattened tail stalk. Arbors are 12 to 15 centimeters long, rarely up to 25 centimeters. The mouth is strongly above (the mouth crack is directed steeply upwards). The bleak has pharyngeal teeth, that is, there are two rows of teeth on each pharynx, of which the outer row has two and the inner row five. The back shows a green-gray or blue-green color, sides and belly have a silver sheen. The fins are slightly darker than the back. The anal fin lies just below the dorsal fin. The number of scales on the sideline is 45-54. A special feature of bleak is that the scales sit very loosely in the skin and are therefore easily lost.

habitat

Arbors live in larger swarms in lakes and slow flowing waters from the barbel region to the bream region , but they are also native to the brackish water of the Baltic Sea. They occur from the Volga to Western Europe, can be found in Ireland, Scotland and Scandinavia.

Way of life

The bleak feeds on plankton and insects on the surface of the water.

Arbors spawn in shallow water from April to June. They stick the roe to rocks, underwater plants, flooded grass and rotting wood.

More types

Another species is the white bleak ( Alburnus albidus ), which occurs in the Mediterranean region, especially in the Adriatic region.

use

As one of the most common white fish , the arbor was once a popular food fish . For example, it was marketed as a grilled fish on a stick in the area around Lake Neusiedl as a regional specialty before it was replaced by imported mackerel in the 1970s. Because of its many, small bones, it has rarely been consumed by humans in recent times, but the focus on autochthonous cuisine means that the arbor is being offered again in specialty restaurants. The species is an excellent bait when Zander - and asp fishing .

From the scales of the "silver fish", as the bleak (a scaly fish ) was also called, fish silver was previously extracted, among other things to make artificial pearls from it .

Hazardous situation

The World Conservation Union IUCN leads the bleak due to the wide dissemination and unknown threats in the Red List of Threatened Species as currently not threatened ( Least Concern )
