The asp or arbitration ( Leuciscus aspius , Syn. : Aspius aspius ) is a species of the family of carp fish (Cyprinidae). Around 2,500 species belong to this group of fish.
The asp is up to 80 (max. 120) centimeters long and very streamlined. The toothless mouth is on top, very large and the gap in the mouth extends below the eye. Asp have 137 intermuscle bones . Therefore, they are not sought-after food fish .
While the fish lives as a typical coarse fish in its youth , it feeds in a predatory manner with advanced age. Besides the chub, it is the only carp fish in our local waters that is predominantly predatory.
The spawning season of asp extends from April to June, with the males showing spawning rashes .
The asp lives in rivers of Central Europe east of the Rhine , and in Eastern Europe up to the Volga . Its southernmost occurrence is the river basin of the Danube , its northernmost southern Sweden and southern Finland. He immigrated to Western Europe from the east through the construction of the Main-Danube Canal . The asp is a typical surface hunter and prefers fast-flowing waters with strong currents.
Since the western limit of the distribution of this fish species is in Germany and its habitat is endangered here, the EU has included it in the Annex to the Habitats Directive .
Importance to fishing
As mentioned at the beginning, asp has a row of so-called Y-bones on the left and right in the back fillet, as well as longitudinally stabilizing inter-muscular bones in the rear. That is why it is spurned by many fishermen.
protection
Asp is listed by the European Union in Annex II of the Habitats Directive and is therefore considered a type of community interest, for whose preservation special protected areas must be designated by the member states.
