As a rule, they are freshwater inhabitants that make their home in rivers and lakes. Some species can also be found in brackish water.

They are relatively small fish with an elongated body that is slightly compressed at the sides. The mouth is terminal, upper or lower and has no barbels. The sideline is always complete. The body is covered in medium to large scales. The dorsal and anal fin are quite short, the dorsal fin begins at about the level of the pelvic fins . The belly is not keeled behind the pelvic fins. Leuciscus species have two rows of pharyngeal teeth , mostly with the pharyngeal tooth formula 2.5 - 5.2; 3.5-5.3 or 2.5-4.2.

Since its existence, species have repeatedly been assigned to the genus or species removed from it, and the scientific species names within the genus have changed several times. Many of their representatives form a number of local forms and subspecies.
