Alburnus is a genus of the carp family . Their distribution area extends over Europe , West and North Asia . They are freshwater inhabitants that make their home in rivers and lakes.
features
Alburnus species are 10 to 40 cm long and have an elongated, laterally flattened body. Characteristic features of the genus are a more or less clearly pronounced ventral keel, which can be both scaly and scaly, and a slightly to greatly elongated anal fin. There is also a large eye socket and a tooth formula of 2.5-5.2 or 2.5-4.2 for the pharyngeal teeth . In addition, the number of trunk and tail vertebrae is the same in Alburnus , or the difference is only one to four vertebrae, while it is between four and six in most other whitefish genera. The number of predorsal vertebrae is 15 to 17.
Alburnus shares all of these characteristics with the genus Alburnoides . The only distinguishing feature of this genus is the downward curved lateral line marked on both sides with small black dots and the straight dark stripe that runs from the rear edge of the gill cover to the caudal peduncle, in Alburnoides .
