The edineţ district is a Raion in the Republic of Moldova . The capital of the Rajons is Edineț .

geography

The Rajon is located in the northwest of the country on the border with Romania along the Prut River . The neighboring districts are Briceni , Dondușeni , Ocnița and Rîșcani .

In addition to the capital, Cupcini has town charter , the rest of the area of ​​the Rajons is distributed among rural communities. The Emil Racoviță Cave is one of the largest caves in the world in Edineț district. The cave named after the Romanian cave explorer Emil Racoviță was discovered in 1959 in an explosion in a gypsum quarry near the village of Criva. It has a widely ramified system of underground tunnels and several underground lakes.

Edineț Rajon has existed since 2003. Until February 2003, the area belonged to the larger and now dissolved Edineț (Județul Edineț) district.

Population development

In 1959 there were 78,042 inhabitants in the area of ​​today's Rajons. In the decades that followed, the number of inhabitants increased steadily: from 85,542 in 1970 to 91,713 in 1979 to 94,001 in 1989. By 2004, as in all of Moldova, the population of the Rajon fell, which was 81,390 in that year. In 2014 it was 71,849.

Ethnic groups

According to the 2004 census, the Moldovans make up the largest ethnic group in Edineț Rajon with 72.2%, followed by the Ukrainians with 19.8%, which is well above the national proportion of 8.4%. Smaller minorities are the Russians with 6.2%, the Romanians with 0.5%, the Gagauz with 0.2% and the Bulgarians with 0.1%.
