The Ștefan Vodă raion is a raion in the Republic of Moldova . The capital of the Rajons is Ștefan Vodă .

geography

The Rajon is located in the far east of the country along the Dniester River and on the border with Ukraine . Within Moldova, the Rajon borders the Căușeni Rajon and the breakaway region of Transnistria .

In addition to the capital, the Ștefan Vodă Rajon consists of the municipalities of Alava, Antoneşti, Brezoaia, Carahasani, Căplani, Cioburciu, Copceac, Crocmaz , Ermoclia, Feştelița, Marianca de Jos, Olăneşti, Palanca , Popeasbozia, Purcari, Rascion Șişte , Talmaza, Tudora and Volintiri. The border town of Palanca is the easternmost municipality of Moldova.

The Rajon Ștefan Vodă exists since 2003. Until February 2003 the area belonged together with the city of Tighina and today's Rajon Căușeni to the now dissolved Tighina County (Județul Tighina).

Population development

In 1959 63,385 inhabitants lived in the area of ​​today's Rajons. In the following decades the number of inhabitants increased continuously: from 71,435 in 1970 to 73,511 in 1979 up to 75,436 in 1989. By 2004, as in the whole of Moldova, the population of the Rajon fell, which was 70,594 in that year. In 2014 it was 62,072.

Ethnic groups

According to the 2004 census, the Moldovans make up by far the largest ethnic group with 92.5%, while 75.8% of the nationwide describe themselves as Moldovans. The national minorities in Rajtefan Vodă district are the Ukrainians with 3.1%, the Russians with 2.7%, the Romanians with 0.8%, the Bulgarians with 0.2% and the Gagauz with 0.1%.
