The Rajon Ocni Raja ( Romanian Raionul Ocnița , Russian Окницкий район ) is a Rajon in the Republic of Moldova . The capital of the Rajons is Ocnița .

geography

The Rajon is located in the far north of the country on the border with Ukraine along the Dniester River . The neighboring districts are Briceni , Dondușeni and Edineț .

In addition to the capital, Frunză and Otaci have municipal rights, the rest of the area of ​​the Rajons is distributed among rural communities. Naslavcea is the northernmost municipality of Moldova.

history

Ocnița Rajon has existed since 2003. Until February 2003, the area belonged to the now dissolved Edineț (Județul Edineț) district.

Population development

In 1959 there were 57,782 inhabitants in the area of ​​today's Rajons. In the decades that followed, the number of inhabitants rose steadily: from 61,544 in 1970 to 62,781 in 1979 and up to 64,485 in 1989. By 2004, as in the whole of Moldova, the population of the Rajon, which was 56,510 in that year - and thus fell below the value of 1959. In 2014 it was 47,425.

Ethnic groups

According to the 2004 census, Moldovans make up the proportionately largest ethnic group in Ocnia Raion with 57.5%, followed by the Ukrainians with 30.7%, whose proportion is well above the national figure of 8.4%. The Russians form a smaller minority with 4.9%, the Romanians with 0.2% and the Gagauz and Bulgarians with 0.1%.

Culture and sights

The sights of the Rajons include the church of St. Peter and Paul in the city of Ocnița, built in the early 20th century, and the Călărăşeuca monastery on the Dniester, founded in the 18th century .

The FC Nistru Otaci is a Moldovan football club was established in 1953 Ocniţa. He was the Moldovan Cup winner in 2005.
