The Großer Sternberger See is about 25 kilometers northeast of Schwerin . It is part of the Sternberg lake landscape . The lake is said to be very rich in fish and the water is very clear. The average depth is three meters.

The banks are usually difficult to reach and rich in reeds . In the town of Sternberg , located on the shore, there is a resting place for water hikers and an outdoor pool .

The lake is traversed by the Mildenitz , which leaves the lake at the north-western end via a weir near Sternberger Burg. The Mildenitz flows into the Warnow to the north of the lake .

The lake is connected to the Trenntsee and Groß Radener See via narrow passages . The Slavic castle Groß Raden is located on the latter . Together the lakes have an area of ​​5.5 km².
