The Bălţi-Leadoveni International Airport ( Russian Международный аэропорт "Бельцы-Лядовены" ) is an international airport in the north of Moldova and is located about 15 km north-west of the center of Bălţi (9 km from the northern outskirts of the district "Dacia"). Bălți-Leadoveni is the country's second largest airport with international connections and one of two airports located in the greater Bălți area. The second airfield is called Bălți City and is located in the city itself.

Geographical location

Bălți-Leadoveni Airport is located in the northwestern part of the former Bălțer District (Județ in Romanian), now in Corlăteni ("Leadoveni" during Soviet times), in Rîşcani district .

history

Bălți-Leadoveni Airport was built in the 1970s and 1980s according to plans by the central architectural office. After the official inauguration in the late 1980s, it was put into operation using aircraft from Chișinău , from the former Moldovan branch of the Soviet airline Aeroflot .

Since 1980, Bălți-Leadoveni has developed into the most important passenger airport in northern Moldova. With Moldovan independence in 1991, Bălți-Leadoveni also became a destination for the Air Moldova state airline, the successor to the remaining Aeroflot aircraft.

According to the plans, a combination of a passenger terminal and a cargo terminal with a tower should be built in Bălți-Leadoveni. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union , there were almost 20 daily flight destinations, including Moscow , Kiev , Sochi .

operator

The operator of Bălți-Leadoveni Airport is the state-owned Moldaeroservice company. This is part of the national "SA Moldaeroservice" holding.

With the economic crisis of the 1990s, the renovation plans were forgotten and the entire aviation industry in Moldova lay fallow. It was not until the end of the 1990s that Chișinău Airport was rebuilt with the help of loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development . To this day it is the only airport in Moldova that is served by traditional passenger and cargo airlines.

Bălți-Leadoveni Airport is now used for irregular passenger and cargo flights. Due to the new economic reality in all of Moldova, Băl Flughafeni international airport is hardly frequented. There is currently (2007) no regular flight connection to Bălți-Leadoveni.

Perspectives

A third of all passengers on the daily Chisinau- Frankfurt connection come from Bălți and the northern Moldovan cantons. The economic development of the entire northern region of Moldova, as well as for the neighboring regions in Ukraine and Romania, such as the opening of the German chain Metro (the wholesale group) in Bălți and real estate investment projects by Western European entrepreneurs in Bălți are generating increased air traffic.

This goes hand in hand with a need for cargo connections.

The geographically closest airports in Romania ( Iași airport ) and Ukraine ( Chernivtsi airport ) and especially the airport in the Moldovan capital Chișinău enjoy state support and are only competitive thanks to European loans.
