Ungheni (1944–1989 Cyrillic Унгень, Russian Ungeny , Унгены) is the capital of the Ungheni Rajon in the Republic of Moldova and with 38,400 inhabitants (as of January 2014) the fourth largest city in the country (excluding Transnistria ). Ungheni is located on the Prut , which forms the western border with Romania . The border crossing at Ungheni connects the Romanian city of Iași with the Moldovan capital Chișinău for road traffic and rail . The steel structure railway bridge was built in the 1870s according to plans by Gustave Eiffel .

Ungheni is 107 kilometers west of Chișinău on the E58 . A side road connects Ungheni via the Romanian town of Cristeşti directly to Iaşi, around 20 kilometers away. The E58 runs along the Prut upriver to the border town of Sculeni, 23 kilometers away, and in an arc to Iași, the largest city in eastern Romania. Molda's highest hill, the Dealul Bălăneşti with a height of 430 meters, is located a few kilometers to the east.

The first written mention of the city dates from August 20, 1462 and goes back to Ștefan cel Mare .
