Fundulea is a town in Călărași County in the Wallachia Region in Romania .
location
Fundulea is located in the Great Wallachia 35 km east of the state capital Bucharest , on the upper reaches of the Mostiştea River . The district capital Călărași is located about 75 km southeast.
history
The village was first mentioned in documents in 1778, and that of Gostilele , which is now incorporated , was already mentioned in 1583. Fundulea was characterized by agriculture for a long time. In the 19th century, Bulgarians settled and assimilated in a very short time.
In the 1920s, the poet Mateiu Caragiale owned an estate in Fundulea. After the end of the Second World War , Fundulea became the location of the Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (INDCA).
In 1989 Fundulea was named a city. The most important branches of the economy are agriculture and the chemical industry.
population
In 1930 about 2800 people lived in the area of today's city. In the 2002 census, the city counted 6,691 inhabitants, including 6,192 Romanians and 497 Roma . About 5800 lived in Fundulea itself, the rest in the two incorporated villages.
traffic
Fundulea is on the railway line from Bucharest to Constanța . Currently (2009) around five local trains run in both directions every day; Express trains do not stop at Fundulea station. The A2 motorway and national road 3 run from Bucharest to Constanța to the south of the city . There are regular bus connections to Bucharest and Călărași.
