Lehliu Gară is a small town in Călărași County in the Wallachia Region in Romania .
location
Lehliu Gară is located in Great Wallachia, 60 km east of the state capital Bucharest , in the Bărăgan steppe. The district capital Călărași is located about 50 km southeast.
history
The place was only created at the end of the 19th century. At that time the railway line from Bucharest was built through the Bărăgan steppe to Feteşti . In the sparsely populated region, the Lehliu train station was established, which was named after a place about 5 km away. Around the station - especially to the north of the railway line - a new town was created, called Lehliu Gară (literally "Lehliu station").
As a result, the station settlement developed into a local center of trade and food processing.
In 1989 Lehliu Gară was named a city. The most important branches of the economy are agriculture and handicrafts. The biodiesel factory opened in 2007 by the Portuguese company Martifer is an important employer .
population
The 2002 census counted 6562 inhabitants in the city, including 5938 Romanians and 611 Roma . About 3,600 lived in Lehliu Gară itself, the rest in the two incorporated villages.
traffic
Lehliu Gară is located on the railway line from Bucharest to Constanța . Currently (2009) around five local trains and four express trains run in both directions every day. The A2 motorway and national road 3 run from Bucharest to Constanța to the south of the city . There are bus connections to Bucharest and Călărași.
