Great Wallachia

The Great Wallachia (German also Muntenia , Rum. Muntenia ) is a historical landscape in the south of Romania . It includes the central and eastern part of Wallachia .

The region is bordered by the Danube in the south and east, and by the Carpathian Mountains and the Milcov River in the north . In the west the border of the landscape is formed by the river Olt , across which is the Little Wallachia .

In the eastern part of Muntenia lies the Bărăgan flat land, which is a large grain-growing area because of the nutrient-rich soil and is known as “Romania's granary ”.

The main city in the area is Bucharest , the state capital. Other important cities are Brăila , Ploieşti , Piteşti , Slatina , Alexandria , Giurgiu , Călăraşi and Slobozia , as well as the former capitals of Wallachia Câmpulung , Curtea de Argeş and Târgovişte .

Places to See in Muntenia are also the Snagov - Monastery where probably the grave Vlad III. Drăculeas and the spa town of Sinaia are in the Bucegi Mountains . The health resort of Sinaia has existed since the end of the 19th century, when the Romanian King Charles I had his summer residence, the Peleș Castle , built there.
