The district has a total area of 3526 km², which corresponds to 1.48% of the area of Romania. Giurgiu County is located in the south of Romania in the Wallachian Plain in the south of the historical region of Great Wallachia . In the south, the district borders on the Danube over a length of 72 kilometers. The Argeș River and its right tributary Neajlov - two of the larger rivers in the district - cross the territory of the Giurgiu District from the northwest to the southeast. In the area of the municipality of Comana , the Neajlov forms Lake Comana , one of the largest lakes in the region.
