Alba district
Alba is a Romanian district ( Romanian Județ ) in the Transylvania region with the district capital Alba Iulia ( German Karlsburg ). Its common abbreviation and license plate are AB.
The Alba county is bordered to the north of the Cluj County , in the northeast of the county Mures , in the east and southeast of the Sibiu county , in the south of the county Valcea , in the west and southwest of the Hunedoara county and in the Northwest to the counties Arad and Bihor .
Demographics
In 2002 the district had 382,747 inhabitants and a population density of 61 inhabitants per km².
In 2011 the district of Alba had 342,376 inhabitants, thus a population density of around 55 inhabitants per km².

The district has a total area of 6242 km², which corresponds to 2.62% of the area of Romania and is therefore the sixteenth largest district (of 41 districts) in Romania.
The Alba district includes the southeast of the Apuseni Mountains (Munții Apuseni) and the west of the Transylvanian Basin (Podișul Transilvaniei) . The area in the southeast of the Alba district is in the Zekesch highlands (Podișul Secașelor) , the south in the Șureanu mountains (Mühlbacher mountains) with the peaks Vârful lui Pătru (2130 m above sea level ) and Șureanu (2059 m) as well as in the historic under forest . The western territory of the district is in the Transylvanian Ore Mountains (Munții Metaliferi) and the northwest in the Bihor Mountains (in the historic Motzenland ).
The largest river is the Mureș (Mieresch) , it crosses the district from the northeast in a southwest direction. The rivers Abrud , Ampoi , Arieș , Galda , Geoagiu , Poșaga u. a. lie in the north-western half; the rivers Cugir , Târnava (Kokel) with the two source rivers Târnava Mare and Târnava Mică , Sebeş (Mühlbach) , Secaş (tributary of the Târnava ) and others are located in the southeastern half of the Alba district.
The largest lakes in the district are the Oaşa and Tău reservoirs , with an area of 4.53 km² and 75 ha, respectively, both on the Drum na anional 67C in the area of the Gebietugag municipality . The next largest is Lake Ighiel (3.20 ha) on the territory of the Ighiu municipality , followed by the Tăul Mare reservoir (2.50 ha) in the territory of the Roșia Montană municipality .

- Drum național 14B from Copşa Mică ( Kr. Sibiu ) via Blaj to Teiuş .
- Drum național 67C - the so-called Transalpina or the “King's Path” (Drumul Regelui) only partially asphalted - from Sebeş (at Pasul Urdele (2,145 m) the highest national road in Romania in the Transylvanian Alps ) to Novaci ( Kr. Gorj )
- Drum național 74 from Alba Iulia , via Zlatna - Abrud to Brad ( Kr. Arad , partly unpaved).
- Drum național 74A from Câmpeni to Abrud.
- Drum național 75 from Turda ( Kr. Cluj ), via Câmpeni to Ștei ( Kr. Bihor )

- Alba Iulia – Târgu Mureș railway line
- Alba Iulia – Zlatna railway line (is a branch line)
- Arad – Alba Iulia railway line
- Sibiu – Vințu de Jos railway line

- Kleinbahn Turda – Abrud , 93 kilometers long, was put into operation in 1912 and closed in 1998.
