The Sibiu – Vințu de Jos railway line is a main line in Romania . It runs in the southwest of Transylvania , on the northern edge of the Transylvanian Alps .

history

When it was built, the railway line was on the territory of Hungary within the Habsburg dual monarchy . In 1872 Sibiu (German Hermannstadt , Hungarian Nagyszeben ) was connected to the railway network by the line from Copşa Mică (German Kleinkopisch , Hungarian Kiskapus ). Viewed from the Hungarian capital Budapest , however, the rail route to Sibiu was quite cumbersome. In order to shorten the route there, the Hungarian government decided to build a railway line from Vințu de Jos (German Unterwinz , Hungarian Alvincz ) on the Arad – Alba Iulia railway via Sebeş (German Mühlbach , Hungarian Szász- Sebes ) led directly to Sibiu. The rail route from Vințu de Jos to Sibiu has thus been shortened from 119 to 83 km.

The line was put into operation on November 25, 1897.

After the end of the First World War , the route described here came to Romania and was taken over by the state railway company CFR .

Todays situation

The line is not electrified and mostly two-track; the sections between Sibiu hc. and Orlat , between Sălişte and Apoldu de Sus or Miercurea Sibiului and Cunța and between Sebeş and Vințu de Jos . Four express trains run daily. The connection is also important for freight transport.
