Miercurea Sibiului ( German  Reussmarkt , Hungarian Szerdahely ) is a small town in the Transylvania region in Romania .

location

Reussmarkt is located in the Sibiu district , 34 km west of the district capital Sibiu in the Unterwald , on the European roads E68 and E81 .

history

Reussmarkt fortified church, 1966

Reussmarkt was founded in the 2nd half of the 12th century by Transylvanian-Saxon settlers. In 1290 the place is mentioned for the first time as a Ruhcmark . Around 1330 the place already had 90 families, which corresponds to a population of around 450 people. The population consisted mainly of farmers, but also partly of craftsmen who were organized in five different guilds . The Reussmarkt chair is mentioned for the first time in 1349 . As its seat, Reussmarkt gained great administrative importance. In 1488 only 43 families are named for the place. The taxes mentioned in the tax lists were also significantly lower than in earlier times. It can be assumed that Reussmarkt was hit hard by the Turkish invasions in the 15th century. In 1658 Reussmarkt was again devastated and burned down by the Turks . In 1704 the place was sacked by Serbs from the imperial army . Around 1713 the place had 68 families. During the Hungarian Revolution , Reussmarkt was also besieged in 1848.

The vast majority of Transylvanian Saxons Reussmarkt now live in Germany . Their number has decreased significantly in the course of the 20th century. The main reasons to be cited here are the Second World War and its consequences, the repression during communism but above all the mass emigration to Germany after the fall of the Wall in the early 1990s.

The economy has always been dominated by agriculture and animal husbandry. In 2004 the community was elevated to a city.

Protestant church

The church and its ramparts go back to a Romanesque building and their main features date from the middle of the 13th century. From 1496 there was a significant strengthening of the fortifications and the conversion to today's hall church . Most of the furnishings date from the 18th century.

The circular wall, which dates from the 13th to 15th centuries, has a gate tower and, on the inside, living quarters and pantries along almost its entire length.

The facility was recently renovated with the support of the Transylvanian Saxon Foundation and is in good condition.
