Tălmaciu ( German Talmesch , Hungarian Nagytalmács ) is a small Romanian town in the Sibiu district in Transylvania .
Location of the village
The city is located on the European route 81 , 18 kilometers outside the district capital Sibiu ( Hermannstadt ) in a southerly direction. In the field of Tălmaciu opens the Sadu ( Zoodt ) in the Cibin ( Zibin ).
history
The settlement was first mentioned in a document in 1265. Due to its close proximity to the strategically extremely important Red Tower Pass , Talmesch has repeatedly been at the center of historical and military events over the centuries.
The castle, which was built near Talmesch in the Middle Ages, was destroyed by Matthias Corvinus in the 15th century because it had proven to be insufficiently resistant to the Turkish attacks.
Russian troops fought against the Hungarian Honvéd Army under József Bem at Talmesch in 1849 . Talmesch was also the scene of fighting during the First World War .
In 1989 the village was elevated to the status of a city.

The village is on the busy national road DN 7 ( European route 81 ), the most important road connection between central and southern Transylvania and the south of Romania. Also located in Tălmaciu a railway station of the CFR .
