Avrig ( German Freck , Hungarian Felek ) is a city in the Sibiu district in Transylvania ( Romania ).
Location of the village
Avrig is located on the Olt (dt. Alt ) - which is dammed near the place - on the European route 68 , 27 km southeast of Hermannstadt ( Sibiu ) in the direction of Brașov ( Kronstadt ).
The place is located at the foot of the Fagaras Mountains ( Fogaras Mountains ).
history
The town of Freck , which was probably founded by Transylvanian Saxons in the 12th century , was first mentioned in a document in 1364. However, under the notable name Affrica . The Latin name Affrica then appears in the following documents: In 1375 a "comes Michael de Affrica" is mentioned. In 1380 a "Heyncze They" is called "villicus de Affrica". In 1384 the Archbishop Demetrius von Gran Nicolaus confirmed the pastor of Freck (Nicolaus de Affrica plebanus) as dean of the Sibiu chapter. In 1387 there is evidence of a Hatter dispute between Freck (villa Affrica) and Szakadat / Sǎcǎdate (villa Czectat). The Romanian name "Avrig" probably goes back to the Latin "Affrica" and the German "Freck" to the Hungarian "Felek".
Freck belonged to the Sibiu Chair until 1878 , then to the Sibiu County.
In the middle of the 18th century, the construction of a baroque castle began, which later became known as the Brukenthal summer residence .
Due to the glass processing industry, the place grew strongly from the 19th century and in 1989 achieved the rank of a city.
traffic
Avrig has rail connections to Făgăraş and Sibiu . However, this has been interrupted since a flood near Porumbacu de Jos. Since 2004, the place has had a bypass road, which leads the transit traffic of the heavily traveled DN 1 north of the populated area past.
