Gheorghe Lazar
Gheorghe Lazar (born June 5, 1779 in Avrig (Freck) ; † September 17, 1823 ibid) was a Romanian educator , writer and theologian from Transylvania .
life and work
Lazar was born in Avrig (Freck) . In the village in the south of Transylvania he attended elementary school, and Lazar completed further training (high school and university studies) in Sibiu (Hermannstadt) , Cluj-Napoca (Klausenburg) and Vienna . He was denied a church career due to his reform-oriented approaches. That is why he embarked on an academic career and taught theology in Sibiu. In this position, too, Lazar was exposed to severe criticism and hostility.
Finally Lazar had to go to Wallachia , where he worked as a reformer of the local school system. This reform brought about both the abandonment of the Greek language of instruction and the secularization of the teaching system in Wallachia and Moldova . After falling seriously ill, Gheorghe Lazăr spent the last months of his life in Transylvania again.
