Großpold (obsolete Apoldu Mare or Polda Mare , Romanian Apoldu de Sus , Transylvanian saxon Grißpuln , Landlerisch Großpoln , Hungarian Nagyapold ) is a place in Sibiu county in Transylvania , Romania .
location
The village lies in the lower forest . It is located on the national road Drum național 1 - here part of the European route 60 - between Mühlbach and Hermannstadt in the west of the Sibiu district and is surrounded by vineyards and orchards.
history
The place was mentioned for the first time in 1288. Two hundred years later, Großpold was the largest settlement in the area of the Reussmarkter Stuhl , to which it belonged politically until the 19th century. In church matters Großpold was part of the Unterwälder chapter.
In the course of the 18th century, the Kurutz Wars and the plague decimated the population of the place, so that many courtyards remained uninhabited. As in Großau and Neppendorf , Protestant countrymen expelled from the Salzkammergut and Carinthia were also settled in Großpold , whose dialects and costumes have been preserved to the present day alongside those of the Transylvanian Saxons .
present
Politically and administratively, Großpold is now part of the small town of Miercurea Sibiului (Reussmarkt) . The German department of the school, which also runs a boarding school, is of supraregional importance .
