Research and Activities

In the early 1970s he conducted field research in India on The "democratic" institution of Panchayat in India and published the results in 1971 in the book of the same name. His varied research activities led him to the farming villages of Gujarat (India) and the slums of Mumbai (then Bombay), but also to "fine people" ( aristocrats , politicians , hunters ), in the environment of peripheral urban cultures ( prostitutes , sandlers , Crooks ), to mountain farmers , smugglers , (then exclusively urban) police officers , the country folk in Transylvania , to country doctors, convent students and poachers .

His current research focuses on cultural sociology , marginal cultures and the farming class in Austria and Transylvania . As an unconventional researcher and academic teacher, Girtler set 10 commandments for field research .

Girtler is known as a passionate advocate of the bicycle as the ideal means of transport, also to be able to get closer to the examined milieus. Such are his books, Beyond the Frontiers. A cultural scientist on a bicycle and from a bicycle: Thoughts and reflections on cultural studies written from the perspective of a cyclist . His column, which appears in the Sunday edition of the Kronen Zeitung , in which he describes himself as a “vagabond cultural scientist”, he often begins by pointing out that he has reached the destination described in the text by train and / or bicycle. Most of the time the column ends with the words "I wish [my interlocutors] the best and move on."

Roland Girtler was associate professor at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Vienna (institute member since 1972). From 1973 to 1975 he taught at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Since 2000 he has headed the Museum Poacher in the Alpine Region in St. Pankraz near Windischgarsten - Rebels of the Mountains.
