The Kleine Zeitung is a regional Austrian daily newspaper . It was founded in 1904 and appears in Styria , Carinthia and East Tyrol .
In addition to the main editorial offices in Graz and Klagenfurt , the paper operates 18 regional editorial offices in Carinthia, Styria and East Tyrol. Each region has its own editions, which differ in the district part (approx. Four pages). Many articles in the Kleine Zeitung also appear in the Neue Vorarlberger Tageszeitung due to a cooperation agreement .
The newspaper is one of the cooperative members of the Austrian Press Agency (APA). In addition, it is present with the largest editorial office of a federal state newspaper in the capital Vienna.
history
The beginnings: 1904–1937
On November 22nd, 1904, the newspaper was founded by the "Catholic Press Association in the Diocese of Graz-Seckau", which belonged to the printing and publishing house Styria. The idea behind the newly founded daily newspaper was to create a newspaper for the then neglected readership of the "common people". The small format made it possible to offer the daily newspaper at an affordable price (2 hellers per issue). On the first front page the other goals were discussed: The paper should "[...] report in a concise form everything worth knowing and interesting of the day in an objective manner" and "not an organ of a political party, but a news paper ". In addition, emphasis was placed on the regional reference of the news and so the Kleine Zeitung presented itself in its first issue as a “[...] well-informed Grazer Lokalblatt”, in which international events were reported at the same time.
With the first edition of 30,000 copies, the Grazer Tageszeitung reached its readers beyond the borders of Styria, as far as Trieste, Ljubljana and Agram (Zagreb). By 1934 the circulation could be doubled to 60,000 copies and the Kleine Zeitung became the most widely read newspaper in the Austrian Alpine countries. Finally, on July 1, 1937, the first Carinthian edition of the newspaper appeared, which at that time was still printed in Graz.
The setback: 1938–1948
The turmoil surrounding World War II did not stop at the newspaper either: On March 12, 1938, an SA raid troop occupied the editorial office. As a result of the "Anschluss" of Austria to the German Reich, the reporting was " brought into line ". For this purpose, the proprietary publishing house Styria was incorporated into the “Südostdeutsche Zeitungsverlag” in Munich and a Reich German editor-in-chief took over the editorial management of the daily newspaper. With this, the Kleine Zeitung eked out its existence as a National Socialist combat paper of the Second World War until Soviet troops banned its publication on May 24, 1945. At the end of 1945, only political newspapers such as the “Steirerblatt” (Austrian People's Party), the “Neue Zeit” (Socialist Party) and the “Truth” (Communist Party) were allowed under Soviet occupation. This only changed when Styria became a British zone of occupation: from May 2, 1948, the Kleine Zeitung was again allowed to appear weekly, on Sundays.
The rise: 1948–1990
The Kleine Zeitung became a daily newspaper again from October 1, 1948. From then on, the newspaper appeared again every day, except on Mondays. Under General Director Karl Maria Stepan (General Director of Styria from 1938 to 1968) a new concept was developed, and later editor-in-chief Fritz Csokolich and publishing director Julius Kainz were also responsible for its implementation. In terms of content, they now advocated critical and impartial reporting in the service of democracy. Above all, this guideline gave the Kleine Zeitung a difficult start in the newspaper landscape at the time: the big party newspapers dominated the market. This even went so far that the major parties blocked the paper allocation and the Kleine Zeitung was denied access to the news of the APA (Austria Press Agency), at that time a cooperative of all party newspapers. The young journalist Hans Dichand found the solution to still be able to supply the Kleine Zeitung with reports from all over the world: He had the news from the BBC radio station typed and created a "news service" that could bypass the APA's block.
In 1948 it was decided to publish its own Carinthian edition of the Kleine Zeitung , which appeared on November 1st. Six years later, in 1954, the Carinthia printing company from Carinthia took over the printing of these regional editions.
On May 1, 1959, the Viennese editorial office of the Kleine Zeitung was set up under the direction of Kurt Vorhofer.
On July 15, 1960, Fritz Csoklich took over the position of editor-in-chief, which he held until 1994. Under Csoklich, the Kleine Zeitung continued to gain in importance until it finally became the largest federal state newspaper in Austria. In 1964, 60 years after the Kleine Zeitung first appeared, a circulation of 100,000 was recorded. In the 1960s, an important step was taken to strengthen the regional character of the newspaper: in 1967 the first regional office was set up in Bruck an der Mur.
In 1968 the weekly newspaper "Grazer Montag" was bought and integrated into the Kleine Zeitung. From now on, the Kleine Zeitung could also appear on Monday, i.e. every day.
In 1970 the Kleine Zeitung became the first daily newspaper in Austria to set up the institution of an ombudsman. Despite the critical voices, this contact point enjoyed great popularity immediately after it was set up and, under Egon Blaschka, 60,000 cases were processed by his retirement in 1988. Werner Suppan took on this role from 1988 to 2000. Peter Filzwieser has been the ombudsman since 2000.
On April 8, 1980, the Kleine Zeitung took another step towards the future: It was the first Austrian daily newspaper to be printed using the EDP-controlled phototypesetting process. The traditional lead type had its day. A few years later, in 1983, the first color picture graced the front page of the Kleine Zeitung.
The regionalization of reporting, which began systematically in 1967, was pushed forward steadily until 1989 and expanded to include 18 regional offices in Styria, Carinthia and East Tyrol.
Step into the future: 1991 to today
In 1991 the newspaper got a facelift: the globally active newspaper designer Mario Garcia designed the new layout.
The Internet age began for the Kleine Zeitung under editor-in-chief Kurt Wimmer: The daily newspaper went online for the first time on May 28, 1995. At www.kleinezeitung.at you could now access the latest news worldwide. On August 31, 1999, the Kleine Zeitung became a legally independent company (Kleine Zeitung GmbH & Co KG), while the Ads and Marketing GmbH & Co KG became a subsidiary.
Since February 1, 2003, the outside of the Kleine Zeitung has been shining in full color, and more space has now been given to regional reporting and entertainment topics. A year later, the starting shot was given for the own advantage club. It offers readers numerous advantages and is said to have served as a model for the entire newspaper industry.
On November 22nd, 2004 the newspaper celebrated a big anniversary. Since the first edition of the non-party Kleine Zeitung, 3.5 million newspaper pages had been produced by 2004. The Neue Zeitung für Tirol , which existed from 2004 to 2008, took over parts of the editorial section of the Kleine Zeitung on the basis of a cooperation agreement.
In 2005 the newspaper set up the aid organization “Steirer hilft Steirern” and its counterpart for Carinthia “Kärntner in Not”. This campaign collects donations for compatriots in need that benefit those in need. In June 2006, the Kleine Zeitung moved even closer to its readers: Reader reporters are now allowed to use their pictures to help shape part of the Kleine Zeitung.
The Graz city magazine G7 was published from April 11, 2010 to 2013.
Since 2010, the newspaper has been available via the iPhone and iPad app and since 2011 also via the version for Android devices.
The small children's newspaper has been published since January 22, 2011 with issues for Styria and Carinthia. The Kleine Zeitung Akademie was founded a year later. It offers readers of the Kleine Zeitung a wide range of seminars, events and lectures on a wide variety of topics.
The business magazine Primus appeared for the first time on March 22, 2012. The magazine focuses on the regional economy in Styria and Carinthia, with each issue taking a closer look at a new focus region and its economy. Since May 8, 2013 the magazine has been accompanied by the event series “Primus Business Talks” in the regions.
The Kleine Zeitung WOHIN app has been available for smartphones since August 14, 2013. This gives the user an overview of around 120,000 Styrian and 90,000 Carinthian events at a glance. On July 17, 2014, the first print edition of the WOHIN magazine will appear as a counterpart to the app, specifically for the Graz and Graz area.
Construction of the media center also started in 2013. In 2015, the Kleine Zeitung moved from its long-term location at Schönaugasse 64 to the new media center at Gadollaplatz 1.
In November 2016, the paid content service “Kleine Zeitung Plus” was introduced. With the charging of independent digital content, the Kleine Zeitung assumed a pioneering role in the Austrian media landscape. The "basic supply" of news is still free of charge for all users of kleinezeitung.at, while in-depth and exclusive content is marked and therefore chargeable. The plus content consists of exclusive reports, regional content, exclusive background information, interviews and comments or opinions from Kleine Zeitung editors.

The newspaper sees itself as an all-interest paper and therefore does not exclude any reader interests. A particular strength of the newspaper is its regional character. With 18 regional offices in Styria, Carinthia and East Tyrol, it is as close as possible to regional events and provides readers with current, local news in the regional section of the newspaper six days a week. The online presence also meets this demand for regionality.
In addition to being close to its readers, the newspaper is interested in the country and its people and is actively committed to this with various institutions such as the ombudsman or the aid campaigns “Steirerhilfe Steirern” and “Kärntner in Not”. This basic idea of not only appearing as an informative and reporting medium, but also taking on the function of a companion for life, is also expressed through various supplements that appear on a certain day of the week.
The Kleine Zeitung also sees itself online as an “interactive companion for life”. The job, real estate and car portals offer the latest news from the respective subject areas and the opportunity to search for a suitable workplace, apartment or vehicle. In addition, all other areas such as politics, economics and sport are constantly updated. The regional news is supplemented daily with new photos and videos from the individual regions of Styria and Carinthia, and videos from our own video team on various regional topics are also continuously published on “Kleine TV”.
brand
The brand family consists of the print product Kleine Zeitung and its three other equivalent platforms, the online portal kleinezeitung.at and the apps for smartphones and tablets. This appearance is supplemented by the small children's newspaper, the social media appearances on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube as well as various themed supplements and guides. In addition, the “Kleine Zeitung” benefit club and the “Steirerhilfe Steirern” and “Kärntner in Not” relief campaigns complete the product family.
The advantage club
The advantage club was opened on April 1st, 2004 and has been one of the most successful customer clubs in Austria ever since. It offers its members offers and discounts from various areas.
Subscribers who have a fully paid, unlimited six or seven day subscription are automatically and free of charge members of the benefits club. If you do not have a subscription, membership is also possible for a surcharge. The advantage club currently has around 260,000 members in Styria and Carinthia.
Aid campaigns "Styrians help Styrians" and "Carinthians in need"
The "Steirer help Steirern" aid campaign was launched in 2005. Together with their counterpart for Carinthia - “Carinthians in Need” - these campaigns, together with the readers of the Kleine Zeitung , help compatriots who are in need.
As the entire administrative costs are borne by the Kleine Zeitung , 100 percent of the donations can go to those in need.
ombudsman
The newspaper was the first daily newspaper in Austria to set up the institution of a newspaper ombudsman. The ombudsman editorial team is a free contact and advice point for readers who have problems in various areas of life, with authorities or companies. Legal advice and representation are not offered - the intervention route tries to find a solution that is acceptable for all concerned, whereby the high-profile reporting in the newspaper helps to solve the problem.
Egon Blaschka acted as the first ombudsman (1970 to 1988). Werner Supper followed him (1988 to 2000). From 2000 until the end of September 2018, Peter Filzwieser was active in this position, since then the Kleine Zeitung has had the first ombudswoman, Ms. Daniela Bachal, who previously worked in the "Besser Leben" department. On average, the ombudsman team receives between 2500 and 3500 inquiries each year.
In contrast to in-house ombudsmen, which primarily deal with complaint management in your own company, you can turn to the ombudsman editorship of the Kleine Zeitung - in addition to internal problems - for all problems with banks, insurance companies, various companies, authorities, etc.
Other glosses
The fictional original of the newspaper is called Amanda Klachl . This market woman gives the daily short comments on current topics. This gloss was created in 1971 by Dieter Gogg , who wrote it until 2000. Since his death, others have continued to write it. It currently appears on the last page. Amanda's image has remained unchanged since 1971, and an attempt at modernization failed because of reader protests.
Dagobert, the good spirit, presents recipes and household tips at irregular intervals. Collections have also appeared in book form.
Awards
The newspaper and its specialist areas have received many prestigious awards in the past. Among the journalists, Frido Hütter, who has been named cultural journalist of the year five times in a row, and editor-in-chief Hubert Patterer, who has been named editor-in-chief of the year three times, stood out.
But the print medium Kleine Zeitung itself also received several awards. The newspaper has already received the “Europe's Best Designed Newspaper Award” in various categories several times.
The small children's newspaper also received its own award: the "World Young Reader Prize" from WAN IFRA - World Association of Newspapers and News Media in the "Editorial" category.
The Kleine Zeitung can also look back on many awards in the field of advertising and marketing. In addition to first place in the "Marketing Campaign with the Best Results" category of the INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards for the "Kleine Zeitung Classifieds Relaunch 2011" campaign and also first place in the "Best Digital Advertising Campaign" category of the INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards for the "General Election" spot, the marketing department of the Kleine Zeitung achieved its greatest success to date in 2007: it received the "Best in show" of the INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards as the highest award for marketing campaigns in the daily newspaper sector.
