Association of the Transylvanian Saxons

The Association of Transylvanian Saxons in Germany V. represents the interests of the Transylvanian Saxons in Germany. The registered office of the non-profit association is Munich . External representation is incumbent on the federal chairman, who is elected by delegates to association days for a term of four years. The association is a member of the Federation of Expellees and sees itself as representing the interests of the members of the ethnic group of the Transylvanian Saxons who came to Germany as a result of expulsion after the Second World War and further political changes.

The purpose is the integration of the Transylvanian Saxons in Germany, the promotion of the worldwide networking of the Transylvanian Saxons as a cross-border community in the worldwide Federation of the Transylvanian Saxons and the preservation and promotion of Transylvanian-Saxon culture. The association puts its membership at 25,205 families (2006). The association is subdivided into regional associations, these into district associations and neighborhoods. Most of the Transylvanian Saxons live in the regional associations of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia. There are further regional associations for the areas of Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate / Saarland, Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein, Berlin / new federal states and Lower Saxony / Bremen.

history

On June 26, 1946, the Association of the Transylvanian Saxons and Banat Swabians in Germany was founded , which was renamed the Association of Transylvanian Saxons in Germany on February 11, 1950 after the Banat Swabians had founded their own association. Renaming took place on May 15, 1950 to the “Landsmannschaft der Siebenbürger Sachsen in Deutschland e. V. “and on November 4, 2007 to today's Association of Transylvanian Saxons in Germany . The Siebenbürgische Zeitung has been published as the medium of the Transylvanian Saxons since June 1950 . On August 5th, the association was one of the signatories of the Charter of German Expellees . On May 26, 1957, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia took over a sponsorship for the Landsmannschaft of the Transylvanian Saxons. An additional sponsorship was agreed with the city of Dinkelsbühl in 1985 . The Union of the Transylvanian Saxons is, together with the national associations of the Transylvanian Saxons from Austria, the USA, Canada and Romania, a member of the worldwide Federation of the Transylvanian Saxons . Since the Association Day on November 3rd - 4th, 2007, the Landsmannschaft has again been called the “Association of Transylvanian Saxony in Germany”. V. ".

Political importance

The association is non-partisan and does not pursue any political goals. As a representative of the interests of an ethnically defined population group, however, it is not apolitical. The association's strategy corresponds to the European policy of understanding. The activity in Germany aims to improve the framework conditions for the societal, social and economic integration of its members while maintaining their cultural character as part of the overall German culture. A constructive dialogue is being pursued in relation to the region of origin Romania, which is based on the unity of the Transylvanian Saxons living there and in Germany. At the same time, a bridging function is performed. The association is the point of contact for the federal and state governments for questions relating to immigrant policy and integration.

Organ of publication

The organ of publication is the Siebenbürgische Zeitung, which has been published (as a print edition) in Munich since June 1950. An online edition is generally accessible at www.siebenbuerger.de. For the 60th anniversary in 2010, all 60 volumes published up to that point were digitized and have since been available online as paid content .

Youth work

The youth of the association is looked after by the Transylvanian-Saxon Youth in Germany (SJD) . There are regional groups in Bavaria , Baden-Württemberg , Hesse , North Rhine-Westphalia , Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland .

A representation of interests is always exposed to criticism or encouragement, depending on the subjective position. The Association of Transylvanian Saxons therefore offers an open online forum that is available to anyone interested in discussions, exchanges of views and submitting subjective evaluations.
