Orlat ( German Winsberg , Hungarian Orlát ) is a village in the Sibiu district in Transylvania , Romania .
location
Orlat is located in the Sibiu district at the confluence of the Râul Săcel ( Schwarzbach ) in the Cibin ( Zibin ) about 17 kilometers southwest of the district capital Sibiu ( Hermannstadt ). The Romanian A1 motorway runs about two and a half kilometers north of Orlat.
Surname
Like almost all settlements in southern Transylvania, Orlat also has a German name ( Winsberg ), but, as is usual with the places in Mărginimea Sibiului , it is rarely used.
history
Orlat lies in the "Mărginimea Sibiului", an ethnically Romanian region in the south-west of the Transylvanian-Saxon villages around Sibiu. A Romanian border regiment was stationed in Orlat during the Austro-Hungarian monarchy .
