Târnava or Tîrnava [ tɨrˈnawa ] (outdated Proştea Mare ; German Großprobstdorf , Hungarian Nagyekemező ) is a municipality in the Sibiu district in Transylvania , Romania .
location
The village is located five kilometers southwest of Mediaș ( Mediasch ) in the northern part of the Sibiu district, on the Târnava Mare ( Great Kokel ) river.
history
In 1331 the village was first mentioned as Ekeemeza Maior . It is assumed that the settlement was founded much earlier - ie before the settlement of the Transylvanian Saxons - probably by Szeklers . At first, Groß-Probstdorf was part of the Sibiu province of “ Seven Chairs ” before it was placed under the Mediasch chair at the end of the 18th century .
The vast majority of the German-speaking population emigrated to Germany as early as the 1960s, but especially after the fall of the Wall in 1989 . They founded a hometown community (HOG) here.
Infrastructure

The community is on the national road DN 14. In addition, the place is connected to the CFR railway network with a stop on the electrified, international line 300 .

The existence of a school in Groß-Probstdorf is documented as early as 1567. Today the place has a kindergarten, a primary school and a lyceum.
The majority of the population is employed in the fields of agriculture, fruit growing, livestock, trade and small industry.
Environmental situation
Due to its proximity to the neighboring Copşa Mică ( Klein-Kopisch ), where there is a carbon black factory and a non-ferrous metal factory , which were in a catastrophic state, especially in the 1980s, the environment in Târnava is still suffering considerably.
