history

The place Poiana Sibiului was first mentioned in 1488. The main occupation of the population is sheep breeding. Until the fall of the regime in 1989 , the shepherds of Poiana Sibiului were some of the richest people in Romania. Since then nobody has torn off their roof to build it a little higher than that of the neighbors, even when getting married, it is no longer a shame to give the daughter to a poorer groom. The only thing the shepherds of Poiana can compete in is the gloss and color of their gates.

population

At the 1850 census, Poiana Sibiului had 4,076 people. 3,989 of them were Romanians , 85 Roma and two were Romania German . The highest population (4,678) - at the same time that of the Romanians (4,669) and the Romanian Germans (6) - was reached in 1930. Since then the population has fallen steadily. The highest number of Roma (138) was recorded in 1977 and that of Magyars (22) in 1910. Furthermore, from 1880 to 1910 some of them confessed to be Ukrainians (highest number four in 1910), in 1966 one as Serb . In 2011, 2,548 people were counted. 2,424 were Romanians, 39 Roma, the rest did not provide any information about their ethnicity.
