Brădeni ( Romanian formerly Hendorf; German  Henndorf, Hungarian Hégen ) is a municipality in the Sibiu district in Transylvania , Romania .

Geographical location

Location of Brădeni in Sibiu County

The elongated street village Brădeni is located on the national road 106 approx. 480  m high on the upper course of the river Hârtibaciu (Harbach) . The neighboring cities of Agnita (Agnetheln), Sighișoara (Schäßburg) and Făgăraș (Fogarasch) are each about 20 kilometers from Brădeni. Due to its location on the military route from Schäßburg to Fogarasch, the place was repeatedly exposed to fire and looting risks in times of war.

history

Henndorf was first mentioned in 1297 as terra Heen . The place arose in the first half of the 13th century when German settlers, the so-called Transylvanian Saxons, were founded . In 1300 the construction of a stone church castle began , which was completed in the 14th century. In 1350 Henndorff gave the St. The underlying document is the oldest surviving document with the German form of the place name.

In 1426 it was mentioned in a document that Henndorf is a free municipality of the Transylvanian-Saxon Königsboden , a year later (1427) the municipality was raised to the market. Three fires in 1503, 1539 and 1566 caused severe damage. A survey from 1920 counted 1,020 inhabitants, of whom 539 were about half Protestant, which at the same time corresponded to the number of German residents. At the present time only very few citizens of Saxon descent live in the village.

The place was connected to the rail network from 1898 to the 1960s by the Wusch , a narrow-gauge railway.

In 1992 there were 751 inhabitants in the actual place. In 2002, 1741 people were registered on the territory of the Brădeni commune. 1010 of them were Romanians , 416 were Roma , 37 Magyars and eight of them were Germans .

economy

The Henndorfer craft guild was also known beyond the national borders, especially the carpentry trade. This is also evidenced by the beautiful church fittings and the Gothic chests in the attic of the Henndorf church castle.
