Bruiu ( German  Braller , Hungarian Brulya ) is a municipality in Sibiu County , in Transylvania , Romania .

Geographical location

Location of Bruiu in Sibiu County

The municipality of Bruiu is located in the south of the Transylvanian Basin . In the Altland , east of the Harbachtal , the community is located in the historic Großschenker Stuhl . At the confluence of the Veseud in the Pârâul Nou , the place Bruiu is in the east of the Sibiu district on the county road ( drum județean ) DJ 105A about 28 kilometers (12.5 km as the crow flies) south of the small town of Agnita ( Agnethlen ). The district capital Sibiu ( Hermannstadt ) is located about 60 kilometers west of Bruiu.

history

The place Bruiu was first mentioned in a document in 1307. On the area of ​​Bruiu - called Kammebach by the locals - archaeological finds that point to the Neolithic age were made. According to K. Horedt , urn graves from Roman times were found on the site of the village . On the area of ​​the incorporated village of Gherdeal ( Gürteln ) an archaeological find that points to the Bronze Age was made.

The farmer from Brall , Anna Schuff , was the last witch to be washed up in the Schenker chair in 1744 (hand and foot cuffed and thrown into a pond) and then burned.

After the creation of Greater Kokelburg County in the Kingdom of Hungary in the second half of the 19th century, Braller belonged to the Szentágota (today Agnita) district. When Făgăraș County ( Județul Făgăraș ) was abolished in 1950 , Bruiu was assigned to what is now Sibiu County.

Since 1850, the highest number of inhabitants in the area of ​​today's municipality was reached in 1941. The highest number of Romanian Germans was registered in 1850, that of Romanians (1307) in 1956, that of Magyars (36) in 1941/1956 and that of Roma (274) in 1930. Furthermore, six confessed themselves to be Serbs in 1930 and one each in 1966, 1977, 2002 and three as Ukrainians in 1966 .

Attractions

  • The evangelical church in Bruiu was built in the 13th century and renovated in the 19th century. The altar is a late Gothic double-winged shrine altar from 1520, on which Mary is depicted with the baby Jesus. The circular walls with four defense towers were built in the 15th century; the fortified church is a listed building.
