Merghindeal ( German Mergeln , Hungarian Morgonda ) is a municipality in the Sibiu district in the Transylvania region in Romania .
Geographical location
The municipality of Merghindeal is located in the northeast of the Sibiu district about eight kilometers outside the Harbach Valley in the historic Altland . On the county road (drum județean) DJ 105, the place is about 70 kilometers northeast of the district capital Sibiu (Hermannstadt) and 7 kilometers east of Agnita (Agnetheln) .
In the Mergeln cadastral community Dealu Frumos (Schönberg) , the geographical center of Romania ( ⊙ ) is located in its current state borders.
history
The settlement was first mentioned in 1336 as Mergendhal . For many centuries, the Transylvanian Saxons made up the majority of the population in the village. Mergeln belonged to the Schenker chair within the Transylvanian administration .
In 1786 a total of 817 inhabitants were counted. As a result of the wave of emigration in the early 1990s, the number of German residents had fallen to 19 by 2003. In 2011, 16 Romanian Germans were registered in the municipality .
Attractions
- The fortified church from the end of the 13th century was devastated in 1600 during the invasion of Transylvania by the Soldateska of the Wallachian voivod Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave) . In 1634 the church was repaired again; Further renovations took place in 1732, 1773 and 1803. The wooden battlement was removed in the 19th century, and the northeast and northwest towers were also removed at the end of the 19th century. In 1960 part of the eastern curtain wall was repaired, and in 1962 its north-western part. The surrounding wall forms an irregular square with two of the original four corner towers that have been preserved. The fortified church and the former town hall (built in the 19th century) are under monument protection.
