Porumbacu de Jos ( German Unterbornbach , Hungarian Alsóporumbák ) is a municipality in the Sibiu district in the Transylvania region in Romania .
The place is also known by the German names Unterforrembach and Unterporumbach .
Geographical location
The municipality of Porumbacu de Jos is located in the southwest of Transylvania in the historical Altland between the Făgăraş Mountains (Fagaras Mountains) and the Olt (Old) in the former Făgăraş (Județ Făgăraş) district . In the south of the Sibiu district, on the Porumbacu brook, the European route 68 and the Avrig – Făgăraş railway line , the place is 34 kilometers east of the district capital of Sibiu (Hermannstadt) .
history
The place Porumbacu de Jos was first mentioned in 1473.
Before the rail connection was completed, there was a horse changing station with ten to twenty horses for the stagecoach line between Sibiu and Brașov (Kronstadt) . A schnapps distillery in Porumbacu de Sus ( called Richirie by the locals ) was rebuilt where the Roma district in Porumbacu de Jos is today. In the area of the municipality there were several water-powered tamper mills for milling traditional clothing by the streams . Today around three systems are still in operation.

The highest number of inhabitants (6181) and that of the Magyars (233) was reached in 1910 in the area of today's municipality since 1850. The highest population of Romanians (5842) was registered in 1900, that of Romanian Germans (274) was registered in 1890 and that of Roma (306) in 1977. Furthermore, in 1880 and 1890, one or four Slovaks confessed to each other at the same time as Serbians , in 1992 and 2002 one each as Ukrainians .
Attractions
- The former post office, built between 1756 and 1760, now a residential building at No. 458, is a listed building.
- A wooden house built in 1899, today at No. 309, is a listed building.
- In the incorporated village of Sărata (salt village ) the church Naşterea Domnului , built from 1800 to 1806, is a listed building, and a military cemetery from the First World War.
tourism
Porumbacu de Jos is a starting point in the Fagaras Mountains, to its second highest peak, the Negoiu ( 2535 m ). From Porumbacu de Sus (Oberbornbach) , the Negoiu hut ( 1546 m ) , which has around 170 beds, can be reached in around seven to eight hours.
