Poplaca ( German Gunzendorf or more commonly Poplaka , Hungarian Popláka ) is a village in Transylvania in the Sibiu district , Romania .
location
The village lies in the mărginimea sibiului at the foot of the Cibin Mountains ( Munţii Cindrel ), the stream Valea Poplacii . On the district road ( drum județean ) DJ 105D, the place is twelve kilometers southwest of the district capital Sibiu ( Hermannstadt ).
history
The village was first mentioned in a document in 1488 under the name Walachi Gonczesdorff . Archaeological finds along the connecting road to Orlat , however, indicate a very early settlement of the area ( Eneolithic ).
Education, economy and social
There is a kindergarten and a primary school in Poplaca .
As in most of the “Mărginime” communities, most of the people in Poplaca also work in the fields of livestock (especially sheep ) and wood processing .
