Location of Arnemuiden in the municipality of Middelburg |
Arnemuiden is a small village which belongs to the municipality of Middelburg . The place is located on the Walcheren peninsula in the Dutch province of Zeeland . Arnemuiden is located around three kilometers from the center of Middelburg.
The Station Arnemuiden is located on the Zeeuwse Lijn , where the Stoptreins direction Roosendaal and Vlissingen hold. Furthermore, Arnemuiden has its own motorway connection to the A58 ( E312 ).
Arnemuiden, whose name means the mouth of the Arne , was a fishing village in the late Middle Ages. It was destroyed by Spanish troops during the Eighty Years War in 1573. In order to promote the reconstruction, Wilhelm von Oranien had the town granted city rights a year later . The then predominantly Catholic place gradually (the rich first) went over to Calvinism .
In 1971 Arnemuiden was incorporated into Middelburg. It is still a somewhat closed community, where traditional costumes are sometimes worn not only for going to church on Sundays . Many of the approximately 5,315 inhabitants make their living from fishing or fish processing .
