Bârghiş or Bîrghiş [ ˈbɨrgiʃ ] ( German  Bürgerisch or Bürgesch , Hungarian Bürkös , Transylvanian-Saxon Berjesch ) is a municipality in the Sibiu district in Transylvania , Romania .

The place Bârghiș is located in the Harbach highlands , nine kilometers from Agnita ( Agnetheln ) and 65 kilometers from the district capital Sibiu ( Hermannstadt ), in the northeast of the district of the same name.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1357 under the name possessio Byrges . The construction of a church by Transylvanian Saxons is documented in the middle of the 17th century .

From an administrative point of view, Bârghiș became a large municipality in the course of the 20th century. In addition to the actual village, the villages Apoș ( Abtsdorf near Agnetheln ), Ighișu Vechi ( Wallachian-Eibesdorf ), Pelișor ( Magarei ), Vecerd ( Wetscherd ) and Zlagna ( Schlatt ) are also co-administered as cadastral communities.

The community of Bürgisch has three kindergartens and five primary schools .

Economy and Social

Agriculture and trade have always dominated the working life of people in the community. Every year on April 23rd and September 14th there are cattle markets.

traffic

The community is located at an important intersection for regional road traffic. This is where the district road ( drum județean ) DJ 141 coming from Mediaș ( Mediasch ) via Moșna ( Meschen ) meets the Harbachtalstraße DJ 106, which connects Sibiu to Agnita .
