The autumn squill ( Scilla autumnalis L. , Syn .: Prospero autumnale (L.) Speta ) is a species of squill ( Scilla ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

features

The autumn squill is an autumn-spring green, perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 15 (rarely 40) centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The five to twelve leaves are usually 6 to 9 (2 to 18) inches long and 0.1 to 0.2 inches wide and blunt. They only develop after the round stem .

The inflorescence is six to 25 flowered and arises next to the rosette. Cover sheets are missing. The hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The identical bloom bracts are 4 to 5 millimeters long and pink to purple in color, with green-brown nerves.

The flowering period extends from August to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14, 28 or 42.

Occurrence

The distribution area of ​​the autumn squill includes the Mediterranean area, the Caucasus, the Crimea, the Middle East, Western Europe and the southern part of Great Britain. Here this species of plant can be found on dry, stony hills, in bushes and on grassy slopes. It is a character species of the Sedo-Scleranthetea class, but also occurs in societies of the Xerobromion association.

Culture

This species is rarely used as an ornamental plant in heather and natural gardens.
