Kitchen onion : As an onion gophyte, it belongs to the cryptophytes

Kryptophyte ( ancient Greek κρυπτός kryptós "hidden", φυτόν phyton "plant") is a name for a growth form of higher plants in which the organs of persistence (renewal buds) are hidden to better survive unfavorable seasons .

to form

There are three groups of cryptophytes:

  • Helophytes ( marsh plants ) survive in the mud.
  • Hydrophytes ( aquatic plants ) survive under water.
  • Geophytes survive underground.
Classification depending on the location of the renewal buds

Since the geophytes represent the majority of all cryptophytes, the terms cryptophyte and geophyte are often used synonymously. Depending on the surviving organ, a distinction is made between onion , tuber or rhizome geophytes.
