The city of Cugir is located in the southwest of the Transylvanian Basin , north of the Șureanu Mountains (also Mühlbacher Mountains ). On the river Cugir of the same name - a left tributary of the Mureș ( Mieresch ) - the city is located on the district road ( Drum județean ) DJ 704, about 11 kilometers south of the European route 68 . The district capital Alba Iulia is located about 35 kilometers northeast of Cugir. The city is the terminus of the Șibot – Cugir railway (built in 1906, now electrified), which connects to the Arad – Alba Iulia railway at Șibot .

The administrative urban area is approx. 350 square kilometers and consists mainly of forest and mountain areas (245 km²). In addition to the main town, Cugir has seven other districts: Bocşitura, Bucuru, Călene, Fețeni, Goaşele, Mugeşti and Vinerea.

History and economy

Cugir was first mentioned in 1493 under the name "Villa Kudzyr". On the mountain "Cetățuia" (495 m) in the urban area of Cugir an ancient princely tomb and a ruin of a Dacian fortress ( Dacia was a Roman province) from the third century were discovered.

The metalworking industry has existed since 1799. Later, an armaments company was established, which was nationalized in 1925 and supported by the English company Vickers Armstrong Ltd. was expanded.

After the Second World War, the city was the largest armament industry center in Romania. At the time of the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu , Cugir was therefore not shown on maps.

With the political upheavals in Romania came the economic collapse. Much of the workers in the factories lost their jobs in the early 1990s. In the meantime, most of the plants have been restructured and privatized. The old, partly no longer used industrial areas were converted into an industrial park in which numerous new companies have settled. In addition to countless different metal goods, for the production of which the city is still a center, furniture, textiles and other goods are now also produced in Cugir.

Because of the current economic crisis, the most important metal and armaments company Uzina Mecanică Cugir is auctioning two halls with a total area of approx. 13,700 square meters on June 2, 2010.

population

In 1850 there were 3461 inhabitants in the area of Cugir; 3226 of them were Romanians , 31 Hungarians , 73 Germans and 125 Roma . In 1992 the largest population was registered with 31,877 and also that of the Romanians (30,649). The highest number of Hungarians (958) was determined in 1910, that of Germans (340) in 1977 and that of Roma (376) in 1992. Serbs (3 in 1930), Ukrainians (21 in 1966) and Slovaks (20 in 1890) have also been registered in the Cugir area since the 1880 survey . In 2002, 25,977 people lived in the area of Cugir (25,158 Romanians, 359 Hungarians, 78 Germans, 339 Roma, 10 Slovaks and 1 Ukrainian).

Politics and administration

The administrative body of the city of Cugir is the city council with 19 members from five political parties (as of 2008). The city's executive body is the city council. As in Germany, it is divided into departments and subject areas and is headed by the mayor, the vice mayor and the management.

Education

In Cugir there are seven kindergartens, five elementary schools and two universities (the national college "David Prodan" and the technical college "ID Lăzărescu") with a total of more than 3,800 students.

Culture

The largest cultural and artistic event is the annual “Toamna Cugireană” autumn festival, which takes place with a large parade, among other things.

The incorporated village of Vinerea celebrates on 21. – 22. August 2010 its 700th anniversary.

tourism

One of the most popular places in the area is the “Prislop Chalet”, about 20 kilometers from the city center. Also known is the “Șureanu” nature reserve with one of the highest vantage points in the region, a glacial lake and a holiday home.

Cugir lies directly on the edge of the main mountain range of the Southern Carpathians with its huge deciduous forests and a very pristine landscape. Tourism is barely developed, so that the entire region is an attractive destination, especially for individual tourists.

religion

In Cugir there are many Romanian Orthodox churches , but also churches of other Orthodox schools. There is also a (by Romanian standards) large Baptist congregation (congregation in the sense of church).

The Romanian Orthodox Church Sf. Arhangheli and Sf. Treime , built in 1808, is a listed building.

Town twinning

Cugir is on friendly terms with Wasserburg am Inn in Germany, Bavaria. The friendly relations between Cugir and Wasserburg am Inn have their origins in the early 1990s. After the collapse of the dictatorial system in Romania, numerous aid deliveries were brought from Wasserburg to Cugir, for which the Verein Freunde Maria Rast and the Kolping Family Wasserburg were primarily involved. By losing thousands of jobs in the arms industry, Cugir had been hit comparatively hard in times of upheaval.

Due to the economic boom in Romania, aid deliveries have decreased, but relations between the two cities have intensified. In the meantime, contacts seem to have been formed on a private basis beyond the official level. In 2006, the two First Mayors - Michael Kölbl from Wasserburg and Adrian Teban from Cugir - signed a friendship agreement in Wasserburg. Since November 2009, Cugir is with Wasserburg a. Inn's official twin town.
