Division of the Transylvanian Alps

The Transylvanian Alps ( rum. Carpații Meridionali ) are part of the Carpathian Mountains in Romania and are often called the Southern Carpathians . The height reaches with the Moldoveanu up to 2544 meters. The mountains separate Transylvania (north) from Wallachia (south). The Transylvanian Alps are joined to the southwest by the Banat Mountains , which are part of the Carpathian Mountains as far as Serbia . The eastern limit is the Predeal Pass.

The division of the Transylvanian Alps is handled inconsistently. Recently, four mountain groups with a total of 23 mountains have been distinguished. From west to east are the most important of these

Whether the low mountain range of the Apuseni Mountains to the west of the Carpathian Arc is counted among the Southern Carpathians is handled differently. Mostly today it is considered as a geomorphological unit independent of the Southern Carpathians.

Cities

Larger cities in the area are Brașov , Sibiu , Petroșani , Reșița and Drobeta Turnu Severin . The region is not yet very well developed for tourism .

Literary history

The Transylvanian Alps found their way into literature through Bram Stoker's vampire novel " Dracula ". The plot of this story is partly set in this region and is based on traditions relating to Prince Vlad III. Rotate Drăculea .
