The Transylvanian Alps ( rum. Carpații Meridionali ) are part of the Carpathian Mountains in Romania and are often called the Southern Carpathians . The height reaches with the Moldoveanu up to 2544 meters. The mountains separate Transylvania (north) from Wallachia (south). The Transylvanian Alps are joined to the southwest by the Banat Mountains , which are part of the Carpathian Mountains as far as Serbia . The eastern limit is the Predeal Pass.
structure
The division of the Transylvanian Alps is handled inconsistently. Recently, four mountain groups with a total of 23 mountains have been distinguished. From west to east are the most important of these
- in the Retezat-Godeanu mountain range (from Pasul Poarta Orientală to Pasul Merișor )
- in the Șureanu-Parâng-Lotrului mountain group (from Pasul Merișor to Rotenturmpass / Olt )
- Șurean (also Sebeș , German Mühlbacher Gebirge)
- Lotru
- Căpățână
- Parâng
- Zibins Mountains
- in the Iezer-Păpuşa-Făgăraş mountain group (from the Rotenturm Pass / Olt to the Curmătura Foii pass )
- in the Bucegi-Leaota-Piatra Craiului mountain range (from the Curmătura Foii pass to the Predeal pass)
Whether the low mountain range of the Apuseni Mountains to the west of the Carpathian Arc is counted among the Southern Carpathians is handled differently. Mostly today it is considered as a geomorphological unit independent of the Southern Carpathians.
