The Banat Mountains ( Romanian Munții Banatului ) is a low mountain range in the south of the Banat on the border between Romania and Serbia . It represents the southern part of the Western Romanian Carpathians (rum. Carpații Occidentali ) and at the same time forms a southern branch of the long, curved Carpathian chain. The Banat Mountains are divided into

The Vršac Mountains are on Serbian territory, all other mountain ranges on Romanian territory.

The highest point is the Vârful Piatra Goznei ( 1449  m ) in the Semenic Mountains.

The southern part of the Banat Mountains is bounded by the Danube . This forms a long breakthrough valley for the largest river in Central Europe . At the end of this stretch, which already extends to the higher Southern Carpathians , lies the Iron Gate, the most spectacular and, until 1972, most dangerous section in the river. It was made more navigable at the beginning of the 1970s by creating a reservoir, blasting it and other construction measures.

As a result of the individual massifs of the Banat Mountains and the Serbian Carpathians on the south bank of the river, the Danube describes several sharp changes in direction, which deflect it several times by 45–90 ° from the general east direction .
