The Jiu ( pronunciation ? / I ; German Schil or Schiel ; Hungarian Zsil ; Latin Rabon ) is a left tributary of the Danube in southern Romania . Audio file / audio sample

The river arises near Petroșani from the Jiul de Vest (German Western Schil ) and the Jiul de Est (German Eastern Schil ). The Jiul de Vest rises between the Retezat and Vâlcan mountains , the Jiul de Est on the border between the Parâng and Șureanu mountains . After unification, it flows mainly south through the Getic plateau or the Hunedoara , Gorj and Dolj districts , before flowing into the Danube in the Wallachian lowlands . The river has a length of 331 km, a catchment area of 10,070 km² and (shortly from its mouth in the Danube) a water flow of 94 m³ / s.

For the historical and economic (mining) significance of the Jiu Valley, see Petroșani .
