history
A settlement at the site of today's city with the name Câmpul Turcilor (about "Turks' field") has been documented since 1499; the first mention of the place name Turceni took place in 1529. A year later, the Wallachian prince Vlad Înecatul confirmed the rule of Turceni to the monastery Tismana . In 1569 a division of the place into an upper and a lower part is documented; two noble families became owners of Turceni. In 1634 the Tismana monastery was again given control of the entire village.
A school has been attested since 1840.
Until the agrarian reform in 1864, the vast majority of residents consisted of families of landless farmers. Even after that the economic situation of the rural population remained difficult, so that residents of Turceni also took part in the peasant uprising in Romania in 1907 .
In the First World War , 122 residents of today's city were killed.
In 1961 the arable land was collectivized. The long rural location changed its character through the industrialization that began after the Second World War . In 1978 the Turceni power plant went into operation with the first 330 MW unit; by 1987, seven units with a total output of 2310 MW had been built. This is one of the 30 largest CO 2 emitters in the European Union. A hydroelectric power station was also built.
In 2004 Turceni received city status.
