Bumbeşti-Jiu ( Gorj County in Romania .
) is a small town inGeographical location
Bumbeşti-Jiu is located in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians , between the foothills of the Vâlcan mountains in the west and Parâng in the east, on both sides of the Jiu River (German Schil ). The district capital Târgu Jiu is about 20 km south.
history
The remains of three Roman defenses from the 2nd century are on the territory of today's city . The Lainici and Vișina monasteries have been attested since the 14th century . A document from 1514 mentions Bumbeşti as being owned by the Vişina monastery.
Bumbeşti-Jiu was originally a smaller village dominated by agriculture and cattle breeding. At the beginning of the 20th century and due to the railway connection, industry began to settle, mainly in wood and stone processing. Marble and granite were extracted in quarries . 1989 Bumbeşti-Jiu received city status.
Other important industries in the city are the armaments and metal industries, food processing, energy generation and agriculture. Currently (2009) the Romanian energy company Hidroelectrica is planning to build a hydropower plant.
population
At the 2002 census, there were 10,617 people in the city, including 10,329 Romanians and 272 Roma .
traffic
Bumbeşti-Jiu has had a rail connection to Târgu Jiu since 1916 and was the terminus of this line for several decades. In 1924, the complex construction of the line in the mining area of the upper Schiltal ( Petrila , Petroșani , Lupeni ) was tackled, which lasted with interruptions until 1948. This railway line, which runs through Bumbeşti-Jiu, is primarily used to transport goods (coal). Passenger traffic is also important; There are currently (2009) around four express and six local trains running in both directions. A total of six train stations are in the city area. The express trains stop at Valea Sadului station . There are also bus connections to the district capital Târgu Jiu . The European route 79 runs through the city .
