Geographical location
Novaci lies in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians , on the south side of the Parâng Mountains on the Gilort River . The district capital Târgu Jiu is located about 35 km southwest.
history
The present-day town of Novaci emerged from a large number of shepherd settlements. The first documentary mention took place in 1502 at the time of the Wallachian prince Radu cel Mare , whereby indirect documentary evidence suggests that the place already existed during the reign of Prince Mircea cel Bătrân (1386-1418). In 1847 a customs post was established. In 1968 Novaci received city status.
The most important branches of industry are tourism, wood production and processing and livestock husbandry (especially sheep breeding).
