Novaci is a small town in Gorj County in Romania .

Geographical location

Novaci lies in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians , on the south side of the Parâng Mountains on the Gilort River . The district capital Târgu Jiu is located about 35 km southwest.

history

The present-day town of Novaci emerged from a large number of shepherd settlements. The first documentary mention took place in 1502 at the time of the Wallachian prince Radu cel Mare , whereby indirect documentary evidence suggests that the place already existed during the reign of Prince Mircea cel Bătrân (1386-1418). In 1847 a customs post was established. In 1968 Novaci received city status.

The most important branches of industry are tourism, wood production and processing and livestock husbandry (especially sheep breeding).

population

At the 2002 census there were 6,105 people in the city, including 6,064 Romanians and 35 Roma . About 2800 lived in Novaci, the rest in the four incorporated towns.
