Lansing is a small town (with the status "City" ) in Lansing Township , part of Allamakee County in the far northeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , Lansing had 999 residents.

Location and traffic

Lansing lies at 43 ° 21'41 "north latitude and 91 ° 13'24" west longitude and extends over 3.0 km², which is spread over 2.8 km² of land and 0.2 km² of water. Lansing is on the west bank of the Upper Mississippi , which forms the border with Wisconsin . The Minnesota border is 11 miles north.

In 1848, William Garrison, the first white settler, came to the area of ​​what is now Lansing and acquired extensive property. In 1849 a post office was set up, operated by Garrison.

In 1851 John Haney , his son James Haney and H. H. Houghton bought the land and established a settlement. It was named after the city of Lansing in Michigan .

In 1864 the town was given the status of town ; In 1867 it was elevated to the city and S. V. Shaw became the first mayor.

Due to its location on the Mississippi, Lansing became a trading center for the surrounding agriculture. Sawmills were set up to process logs rafted downstream all day.

In 1899, JM Turner founded a mother-of-pearl button factory that employed several hundred mostly women

The Black Hawk Bridg , which connected the opposite bank of the Mississippi in Wisconsin, was opened in 1931 and celebrated by citizens of the three states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

After the bridge was badly damaged by ice in 1945, it could no longer be used. In 1957 it was opened to traffic again after being repaired. Since then, the Lansing Fish Days , which take place every year on the second weekend in August, have been celebrated.
