The county is located in the far northeast of Iowa and borders Minnesota to the north . In the east, the Mississippi forms the border with Wisconsin . Allamakee County covers an area of ​​1,706 square kilometers, of which 50 square kilometers are water.

In Allamakee County, on the west bank of the Mississippi, is part of the only national monument in Iowa: Effigy Mounds National Monument , an archaeological reserve for artificial hill structures of early Indian cultures.

history

Allamakee County was formed on February 20, 1847 from designated as free - but in reality settled by Indians - territory. It was named either after the dealer Allan Mackee or after the Indian name for lightning . Both statements can be found in the literature.
