The Linn County was formed on December 21, 1837 on the area of the former Wisconsin Territory . It was named after Lewis F. Linn (1796–1843), a US Senator from Missouri (1833–1843).
The first county seat was in Marion. As early as 1855 there was a debate about relocating the headquarters to the rapidly growing Cedar Rapids. In the following years the demand became more violent, especially since Cedar Rapids had a railway connection since 1859 and had become an important trading center in eastern Iowa. In 1919 enough votes came together to move the county seat to Cedar Rapids.
