Washington County is part of the metropolitan area around Iowa's former capital, Iowa City .

The county is located in southeast Iowa between the Iowa River and the Skunk River and is about 45 km to the east from the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois . Washington County covers an area of 1,473 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

The first settlers settled in 1835. Washington County was originally formed as Slaughter County on January 18, 1838 . A short time later it was renamed Washington County in honor of George Washington .
