The Iowa River is a 482 km long right tributary of the Mississippi River .
The river has two headwaters that have their source in Hancock County . They converge after about 40 kilometers. First, the Iowa River flows southeast through Iowa Falls , Marshalltown, and the Amana Colonies . In Johnson County it makes an arc south and flows through Iowa City . The river is dammed below Iowa City. Before it flows into the Mississippi, the English River and Cedar River meet the Iowa River.
