By 2013 the population increased to 139,155. The county seat is Iowa City , which was founded with this name as the capital of the Iowa Territory .
Johnson County is located in the north of the metropolitan area around the city of Iowa City.

The county is located in east-east Iowa and has an area of 1,614 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water.
In the center it is traversed by the Iowa River , a right tributary of the Mississippi . The Cedar River , which flows into the Iowa River further southeast of the county, flows through the far northeast of the county.

Johnson County was formed on December 21, 1837 from former parts of Des Moines County in what was then Wisconsin Territory . It was named after Richard M. Johnson (1780-1850), the ninth Vice President of the USA (1837-1841).
