The Buena Vista County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 the county had 20,260 residents and a population density of 13.6 people per square kilometer. By 2013 the population increased to 20,567. The county seat is Storm Lake .

The county is located in central northwest Iowa and has an area of ​​1,502 km², of which 14 km² are water.

The North Raccoon River rises in the northeast of the county and forms part of the Mississippi River basin via the Raccoon River and the Des Moines River . The north and west of the county is drained by the Little Sioux River , a left tributary of the Missouri .

Buena Vista County was formed on January 15, 1851 from territory that was designated as free - but actually populated by Indians . It was named in memory of the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican-American War .

The first courthouse, a two-story wooden house, was built in Sioux Rapids in 1870 but burned down in 1877. In 1878 the administrative center was relocated to Storm Lake and court hearings were held at the town hall there. In 1888 a new three-story brick building was completed as a new courthouse .

The current building was opened in 1972.

According to the 2010 census , Buena Vista County had 20,260 people in 7,579 households. The population density was 13.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.45 people lived in each of the 7579 households.

The racial the population was composed of 80.7 percent white, 2.7 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 5.6 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.8 percent were descended from two or more races.
